Together with Santa Croce, San Lorenzo and Santa Maria Novella, it is one of the “great basilicas” of Florence, a reference point of the Augustinian order. The church has given its name to the entire surrounding neighbourhood called Borgo Santo Spirito and located in the Oltrarno area, that is on the left bank of the river. A jewel of Renaissance architecture, the church was the last great project of Filippo Brunelleschi.
