This imposing building, built between the 13th and 14th centuries as the seat of the Podestà and Council of Justice, was a lowly prison between 1574 and 1858. The Museo Nazionale del Bargello conserves a highly important collection of Renaissance sculptures, with masterpieces by Donatello, Luca della Robbia, Verrocchio, Michelangelo, Cellini and Giambologna, as well as prestigious collections of “lesser arts”.
