Steve McCurry: Children

Categories

Famous American photographer Steve McCurry presents a new thematic exhibition dedicated to childhood at the Museo degli Innocenti.

100 photographs taken over nearly fifty years portray children from every corner of the world in scenes of everyday life. As a tribute to this extraordinary life period, a gallery of striking portraits tells the story of childhood in all its facets with a characteristic common trait to all: the gaze of innocence.

The exhibition is located inside a place that symbolizes childhood, the Istituto degli Innocenti – literally: Institute or Hospital for the Innocents – in Florence. The place was designed by Filippo Brunelleschi to give an opportunity for a future to the little ones entrusted to the care of the community and whose history is represented in the Museo degli Innocenti.

The children immortalized by McCurry’s lens are different in ethnicity, clothes and traditions but express the same feeling with their inexhaustible energy, joy and ability to play even in the most abnormal and difficult contexts, often determined by social, environmental or conflicting conditions.
