Le simmetrie dei desideri – The symmetries of desires – is a research project by Ilaria Turbo, created in collaboration with the citizens of the Sant’Ambrogio district and the Complesso delle Murate area. The project intertwines with personal and local memories that underline the complex structure of today’s contemporary society.

Turba’s work takes great inspiration from the four years she spent in Marseille as artiste associée (associated artist) at Le ZEF – scène nationale de Marseille. During her extraordinary experience she came in contact with many traditional practices, like that of panification, the ancient ritual of all Mediterranean cultures.

While in Florence, the artist used these memories to rechannel her art and also involve the citizens of Murate and Sant’Ambrogio. The end result was the creation of a symmetry of desires, a whole collection of aspirations and wishes. During her stay Ilaria Turba then placed objects, photos and other art pieces in the many exhibition spots. Each single object is part of a collective narrative, of a mapping of memories and desires of the community.

The artist met and involved the inhabitants of Sant’Ambrogio by coming to their houses, by going to malls and artisanal shops, to the market and in the streets, by knocking on many doors. Now, the most important wishes and desires of the citizens have been transformed into a piece of art, and are the main characters of the exhibition.
